A well-established and widely embraced perennial from the aroid family, originally hailing from South Africa, displays broad, fleshy, vivid green leaves and distinctive funnel-shaped inflorescences. This plant is extensively cultivated in warm temperate climates for both its ornamental value and as a source of cut flowers. As a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial, it retains its evergreen nature where sufficient rainfall and favourable temperatures prevail, transitioning to deciduous in regions with pronounced dry seasons. Thriving in habitats near streams, ponds, or on riverbanks, it reaches a height of 0.6–1 m (2.0–3.3 ft), forming large clusters of broad, arrow-shaped dark green leaves, each extending up to 45 cm (18 in) in length. The impressive inflorescences, appearing in spring, summer, and autumn, feature a pristine white spathe measuring up to 25 cm (9.8 in) and a yellow spadix that can extend up to 90 mm (3 1⁄2 in). Emitting a subtle, sweet fragrance, Aethiopica contributes an elegant touch to its surroundings. It’s important to note that Aethiopica contains calcium oxalate, and the ingestion of the raw plant may induce a severe burning sensation, along with swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat. Additionally, stomach pain and diarrhea may occur.
