Introduced from southern Spain to this country in 1596, the Canterbury Bell has long been a favourite and is often regarded as the quintessential biennial—the archetypal cottage-garden bloom. Its tall flower spikes bear sizeable blossoms, epitomizing the classic cottage-garden look. They make splendid cut flowers and cut well in a vase. If grown in pots in a cold greenhouse, you can enjoy their beauty up close. Sow under glass in March and transplant outdoors in April, and they will flower in the same year; if you cut them back in autumn, they will bloom again the following year.
